This visual effect video tutorial shows you how to make a fire effect in GameMaker studio with particles.

Is the the only way?
No, but the most effective way concering resource saving. The idea behind this approach is that you have two layers in which 3 different particles are being spawned to create the illusion of one fire object. The first particle is blending and creating the brightes/hottest spot of the fire. Following is one orange particles that replaces the first particle after a short duration. To make this effect a little more round you can put an optional smoke particle behind both “front fire” particles. The last thing is to make the whole thing a bit more realistic by drawing a yellow glow behind to simulate a artifical light emitting from the whole amalgamation.

There are alternatives how this can be done. One is with Pixel Fx Designer. This programm uses particles aswell but render then endresult through a pixel shader to create this pixelated result which defently looks neat.
