This vfx tutorial shows you how to make a pause screen look better with a few mouse clicks.

The idea is quite simple, you have a pause menue pop up and it looks kind of bland. This video shows you with 3 steps how to improve how your game looks like while being in a pause screen. The first and most obvious one is to draw (draw or draw_gui) a black half transparent rectangle to defocus things that are no essentail while pausing. Then to further focus on the buttons and text being display for the pause screen you can use the fx layer and blurr the things below it which is a common practise in video games To make this even more interesting you can create a distortion and chromatic abberration effect with the under water fx. Finally to toggle these things off and on you simple set the fx layer to visible (layer_set_visible) or not when needed. That’s it!
