What makes a good boss battle/fight? This video shows regular halmarks of every boss fight we see in countless video games and how they achieve a good feeling by playing against bosses.

This video series shows in the first part (this one here!) an analytic point of view from the perspective of a game designer what is going on during the boss battle. By that you understand/see the mechanics/ a structure and which you can use to formulate/create your own boss fights.

Most games has them. Boss fights. What may look intuitive to the player is a formula for the game designer which has to come up with a set of rules that define a structure, so that the player can learn patterns and by that beat the bosses after a while. The video shows the video game Astalon: Tears of the earth and it has a well scripted boss fight.

The sequence is as follows:
Step 1: activate boss fight, define a entry zone
Step 2: introduction of boss, screen shake, boss does a pose, gui for health
Step 3: actual fight, go through repeating pattern, increase difficulty by new pattern xor speed up the learned process
Step 4: boss hp is 0: defeat animation, get reward
