This effects has its original roots in a time when crt television had its limitations and the standard only displayed half of the signal from a video game.
But why is this obsolote effect still used in modern retro video games?
The first reason would be nostalgia, because that is how millions experienced video games on their home consoles. But if you take a closer look, you can see that those scanlines actually enhance the visuals of those old school games. But how can that be?
