This basics video tutorial shows you the way Gamemaker uses layers and the depth system.

Is there a difference? Yes there is!
If you own GameMaker Studio 1.4 or a previous Game Maker copy you are only using the depth system which is basically defining what is being draw on top of each other. So the higher the number the far more it goes to the back from a viewers perspective. But if you are owning GameMaker Studio 2, YoYo Games enhanced the ide additinally with layers. These can be simply used for cosmetic things like tilsets, background or assets (which are sprites). Or you can put on those layers instancs (objects). But those layers have additionally a depth assigned to them.

So you have both worlds and can therefore use both systems in sync with each other. The main difference besides layers which a neat way to orgainize things is that layers are permanent. In contrast to this, depth creates a temporary layer and deletes it when the object/thing in question doesn’t exist any more.
